The Bigger the Better!

“We want it to be big!” says the bride and groom of this cake.  They wanted it as big as they could get it and that’s what they got.  This cake had a base of 16 inches in diameter.  The top of this cake was 10 inches in diameter which in most cases is the center tier of most wedding cakes. To make this cake even bigger if was four tiers instead of the average three.   The decorating of this cake was challenging, but so much fun to do.   The design was to have a diagonal zigzag going up the cake.  First I covered the cake in white fondant and then cut diagonal lines.  I then covered the cake with hot pink fondant where there wasn’t any white fondant.  After that I got my fondant on the way I wanted it, I started doing the piping.  I started with the black buttercream frosting and piped the swirly design on the pink fondant. I then added light turquoise dots to the white fondant.  Then to join the two fondants together I piped the edges of where the fondants met with the turquoise frosting.  Flowers were added to the corners of where the fondant sloped.  By doing this is it tied the whole cake together, and gave it the flare that it needed.
This cake was fun, beautiful, and perfect just like the bride and groom!

Every bride wants their cake to be different than the rest.  She wants the cake to stand out and show off the personality of her and her groom.  There are many different ways to do this, by the shape of the cake, the flavor of the cake, the color of the cake, and ultimately the design of the cake.  The Bride  and I showed off their personality perfectly with the design and colors that they chose.
This cake was a square confetti cake, with chocolate filling.  The bottom tier and top tier matched, covered with purple fondant, diagonal scoring, and edible pearls where the diagonal lines met.  The middle tier was covered in smooth purple fondant. When I stacked the cake I turned each tier asymmetrically.  I then added a sky blue ribbon to the bottom of each tier, and added white roses to the corners of the cake.  For the topper on the cake I added a big, silver “D”, and then added white roses around that also to tie the topper into the rest of the cake.
This cake was perfect for this couple.  It showed off their fun, spunky, and sweet personality.

From Paper to Cake!

This cake was so much fun to make.  I was so excited when the bride asked me if I would make her cake.  When we had our first cake meeting, she handed me a picture that her and her fiancĂ© drew.  I looked at it and knew that this cake was going to be fun to make.
What I did was start with a round cake and covered it in white fondant. Then I took a deep aqua blue ribbon and placed it in the middle of the tier. I then took black frosting and drew swirls on the bottom half of the tier.  I did this for all three tiers. Then once at the reception, I stacked the cakes and then placed roses, daisies, and baby’s breath down the side of the cake.  For the finishing touches I added a Royal Icing plaque that added the bride and grooms initials on it.  This gave the cake a very personal touch, by the bride and groom.

I loved making this cake! It was so much fun! I loved how it challenged me in a way that I had not been challenged before. And everybody knows how I like a challenge! J

A Wedding to Remember!

This was such a fun weekend! I had a wedding cake that I did, that ended up being gorgeous.  The bride wanted something that was simple and elegant, but yet different than the traditional cakes that you see.  So what I created was a three tier cake, covered in white fondant.  I added white piping around the edges. I took square vases and coordinated with the florist and added lilies in the vases, and placed the vases on the cakes, and then placed each tier on top of the vase with a board under the cake.  By doing this it added height to the cake and architectural design.  The florist also added red roses to the corners of the cakes, which add amazing color.  The cake was stunning!
The bride and groom loved it!

Birthday Time!!

I thought this week I would show you a birthday cake I did for a little girl turning two years old.  Her mother wanted it to look very girly.  So I thought polka dots! What I did was a two tier cake covered in white fondant.  Then I wanted to add color to it. I took bright pink and turquoise fondant and made different sized polka dots with them.  I applied them with Royal Icing, so that they would for sure not move.  Something I thought would be fun to do is add fondant balls to the bottom of the cake, and where the two tiers meet.  So I made white, turquoise and pink balls.  I did them in different sizes so that it would match with the polka dots and add some depth to the cake.  Another fun element that I added to the cake was the topper.  I took some craft paper and spelled her name out and then placed each letter on a succor stick.  I also had the sticks going in a zigzag line to add even more depth to the cake.

The mother the loved the cake! It is exactly what she wanted for her little girl.  The little girl also loved it.  When she saw it she said it reminded her of Mickey Mouse.  I was so excited that they liked the cake! It is always a relief when they say it exactly what they wanted.

The Great Beginning

Hey! Since this is my first post I thought I would share with you some of the cakes I have done in the past. I love doing cakes for a lot of different occasions. I have done baby shower cakes, wedding cakes, and birthday cakes.
This is a Wedding Cake that I made in May of 2011.  The Bride wanted something classy, but different.  She didn’t want it to busy but she wanted some details on it. So what I did was make a three tier cake with white fondant.  I then took her colors, blue and orange, and went around the edges with ribbon. By doing this it gave the cake the pop of color that it needed, and made it fit into the rest of her wedding. How did I add detail to the cake without it being too busy?  I took white royal frosting, which is a frosting that gets hard overtime, and made dots in a triangular formation on top of the white fondant. This gave it the perfect amount of texture that the cake needed.
The Bride and Groom loved this cake! Their eyes lit up when they saw it. That is the best part of making cakes.  When you can tell that you did your job right and that you met your client’s expectations it makes it all worth it.
